Helen Cecelia Back.
Synthesizer
17
Face: Anonymous portrait studio client.
Powers:
Helen's power centers around manipulation of soundwaves. Mostly, she forms sounds which she has "memorized." Music is the easiest for memorization purposes. She can also manipulate volume, redirect or block sound, and other things she has not yet come close to perfecting. She often carries a small white-noise machine in her purse as something to 'draw upon' (she also puts it at her bedside to lull herself to sleep). Otherwise, she must rely on ambient sounds. In a pinch, she can always breathe hard.
Helen is incapable of actual speech due to damaged vocal chords, and she only knows a little American Sign Language. Her control over her powers is minimal, but usually nothing worse happens than the broadcasting of a song stuck in her head. There has only been one exception to this so far.
On a non-powers note, Helen is extremely physically fit. She has some basic knowledge of self-defense from the dirty-fighting classes available for women throughout New Orleans. Unfortunately, these classes were not quite sufficient in an incident several months ago. She's gotten better since then.
Personality:
Helen is quite energetic. She has spent the past few months, since the lost of her voice and manifestation of her powers (the latter did not cause the former, but they coincided), reconciling her not-especially-patient nature with the limitations/delays placed upon communication.
She has a phobia regarding knives and recurring nightmares regarding the incident several months ago. In all other circumstances, however, she tries to "keep a hold of herself," (not panic, control her temper). She is devoted to her dancing: as an art, as a planned career, and as a catharsis.
Helen loves music, food, and boys, and has very broad taste in each, not particularly tied to any "type" but appreciative of things in their own terms. Falseness is the only universal turn-off. However, she will be quick to declare that although a dish may be good for what it is, no other American cooking can hope to match the excellence of Southern Louisiana cuisine.
Helen is a good Catholic girl. Not particularly orthodox in dogma, but fairly faithful to ritual and the more basic morals. She also has a tendency to follow rules. They're there to protect people, after all.
History:
Neither orphan nor runaway nor possessed of a mysterious past, Helen was until quite recently a fairly normal girl from a fairly normal middle-class Louisiana family, with nothing more unusual in her days than dance classes and rock concerts.
Hers is a "late-bloomer" mutation. Manifestation took place under stress when she was attacked several months ago (her mother always said it wasn't safe to walk alone down Simon Street after dark). Her vocal chords were damaged beyond repair in the incident; doctors say she will never speak again. The muggers will never hear again, so that's some small comfort.
Misc:
Helen carries a pen and paper for communication purposes. However, this is not the manner which she finds easiest to "say" things. Her powers come much more instinctively to the purpose. As a dancer, Helen has been running around in spandex since long before she left New Orleans to go to Xavier's. She always wears a scarf.
